The BSI have compiled an online introduction to the immune system entitled "The Immune System: Nature's 'Self' Defence". This is supplemented with downloadable posters dealing with various immunological themes. We will be inviting students across the UK to view the pages and submit questions to us, which will be answered by volunteers from the BSI membership.

Croatian Immunological society

The Croatian Immunological Society has undertaken following actions regarding this year's Day of Immunology:

1.      In collaboration with the publisher of the "GEO" magazine, we have distributed their latest (April) Croatian issue to all high schools in Croatia. The main topic of this issue is entitled „Immune system – friend or foe“. In addition to this popularly written article, Croatian high school students will be given a lecture on immunology in their biology class during the end of April and through May.

2.      We have also initiated a series of introductory lectures covering major topics on immunology in faculties in Zagreb, Rijeka, Split and Osijek.

3.      We are preparing a new webpage with a special article regarding this year's „Global Day of Immunology“. Topics regarding the „Global Day of Immunology“ will be introduced in the forum area and the general public will be invited to ask questions about immunology that experts from society will try to answer. The presentation of the new webpage will be presented in Zagreb at a meeting organized for all members of the Croatian Immunological Society.

Czech Immunological Society

Prof. Blanka Rihova gave an interview about her science and was given an opportunity to mention and explain what the Global Day of Immunology is. It was a regular program on radio station Classic FM and the interview was on the air three times: April 8, 9 and 10th.

On Monday 23rd,  Prof. Rihova was invited to CT1 (first pogram of Czech TV) to talk about immunogenetics and other immunological topics, and at this occasion she also got an opportunity to talk about the "Global Day of Immunology".

The Institute of Microbiology, Institute of Molecular Genetics and 1st School of Medicine Charles University in Prague will organize on April 23rd a whole day colloquium on Immunology devoted to the Global Day of Immunology. Professor Lefkovits (University of Basel) was kind enough to agree to open it and act as a chair for the whole day. Speakers are only PhD students from representative research groups. The only lecture given by a professor is devoted to a New Vaccine against Cervical Cancer and will be presented by professor Vonka from the Institute of Haematology and Blood Transfusion.

All regular lectures on Basic and Clinical Immunology presented to undergraduate students (Faculty of Natural Sciences, Schools of Medicine) will be open with a short explanation what the Global Day of Immunology is.

Slovak Immunological Society

Pravda, 28.04.2007:

Sunday 29 April will be the third International Day of Immunology, declared by the European Federation of Immunological Societies. In the current sense of the word, immunology is the science of the organism’s defence ability. The father of the science is Louis Pastor, who introduced the term vaccination. “Inoculation against infectious diseases is one of the greatest success stories of medicine” says Professor Miroslav Ferenčík from the Slovak Immunology Society. “Thanks to successful vaccination programmes, we no longer have polio, measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough or tetanus “scares” in Europe”. Immunologists help clarify the mechanism for the onset of cancer and thanks to a system of molecular symbols for cells, they determine tissue compatibility or incompatibility - a key requisite for successful transplanting. In the immunity system defects may develop that are the cause of its reduced or excessive activity. At the present time allergic diseases pose a serious medical problem.

Turkish Society of Immunology

The “Day of Immunology” was celebrated by organizing public meetings in five different cities. Schools were visited during the week days, interactive seminars were held and booklets explaining the main functions of the immune system were distributed. TSI also opened a booth in one of the largest shopping malls of Istanbul promoting immunology. “Day of Immunology” badges and T-shirts were distributed. The Day of Immunology has been an excellent way for the TSI to develop its primary aims. TSI looks forward to organising many more DOIs in the future.
