To celebrate the DOI 2010 the Italian Society of Immunology has organized events targeted to a general audience in different cities in the Country. Some immunologists (Vincenzo Barnaba, Enza Piccolella, Angela Santoni) of the "Sapienza" University in Rome organized an event for young students from a number of Roman secondary schools. There were presentations on the basic mechanisms of the immune response, how the immune system fights and defeats the pathogens, and how the immune response can cause autoimmunity and allergy, with two actresses performing the different immuno-pathological conditions (infections, allergic diseases, autoimmunity) and a cartoon movie (from the "Your Amazing Immune System: How it Protects your body”) representing the most important molecular and cellular mechanisms of the immune system. More than 300 possible "future" immunologists actively participated and greatly enjoyed the event, demonstrating interest and curiosity on immunology.
The Campania section of the Italian Society of Immunology organized an Open Day in Naples, targeted to attract a general audience, to emphasize the importance of immunology to understand human diseases and to develop new possible diagnostic tools and therapeutic targets. The meeting, entitled “Immunological Basis of Autoimmunity”, was advertised on the italian TV (RAI Tre) and newspapers (La Repubblica) and has been attended by about one hundred people.
The Friuli Section of SIICA (named GRIICA-FVG) organized the first edition of "Adopt an Immunologist”. The event was aimed at the junior high school and high school students. GRIICA’s immunologists have organized joint lessons with the life science teachers of the host schools on topics indicated by students. Addressed issues were vaccines, biological drugs, defences against infection. In addition, students most interested in were invited to attend a summer week in the laboratory of immunology at the University of Udine.

Five Events across Germany Around Congenital Immunodeficiency

On Thursday, 29 April 2010 the European Federation of Immunological Societies (EFIS) celebrated the day of Immunology. The Deutsche Gesellschaft für Immunologie (DGfI), one of the main organisers of this event, was supported by Deutschen Selbsthilfe Angeborene Immundefekte e.V. (dsai). According to expert estimates, approx. 100,000 people suffer from congenital immunodeficiency. However, only 2,500 patients have been diagnosed so far. Prof. Reinhold E. Schmidt, Vice President of DGfI and Director of Clinical Immunology at the Medical School Hanover: Several Germany-wide information events took place during the Day of Immunology 2010 to raise the awareness amongst the public, the physicians and possible victims and to increase the alertness for this clinical picture.”

On the occasion of the Day of Immunology, the CSL Plasma Center Berlin and dsai informed about the donation of blood plasma and it importance for the treatment of life-threatening diseases. Donators of blood plasma met with patients at the CSL Plasma Center on 28 April. Gabriele Gründl, Federal Chairperson of dsai and dsai patron André Sarrasani were available to answer questions.

On 29 April the Jeffrey Modell Center of the Hanover Medical School celebrated its annual Day of Immunology with focus on adolescents to interest young people in immunology and to highlight medical research. A suitable program for secondary school students majoring in biology was arranged. In cooperation with Elisabeth Heister-Neumann, Lower Saxony´s Minister for education and patron of our DOI activities, the Jeffrey Modell Center sent invitations to approx.70 secondary schools in and around Hanover. The topic of the Jeffrey Modell Center in 2010 is “Building Blocks of the Immune Systeme”. Approximately 550 students and their teachers participated in the DOI activities: a ‘market square’ with 20 information stalls and do-it-yourself-activities followed by lectures.

Dsai also received a donation in the amount of Euros 5,000 from Lions Club Filderstadt. The regional director Claudia Schill-Huss received the cheque in Stuttgart. The donation will be used as contribution to awareness campaigns.
